Here are two more from a series of random thrift store finds and Utah’s West Desert that I did in my last college photo class. I tried to find ordinary items that would be completely out of their element when placed in the vast nothingness out west. I don’t think I was entirely successful and have been yearning ever since for a pickup truck, better (and tackier) props, and a good weather day so I can go give it another whirl. Think Pink Floyd liner notes… Enjoy!

Stupor

With all the busy-bee things I have to do today, I can't quite figure out why I'm sitting here being bored and wasting time, but I am. In my too-much-to-do-so-I'll-do-nothing stupor, I stitched another panorama. This one was made in Arches National Park a few days before 2006. That's Double Arch in the center, one of the coolest, most awe-inspiring rock formations I've ever seen. It's two arches fused at the hip, making an arch alcove. Trav and I climbed up to the base of the, dare I say twins, and sat there catching sunshine on our winter white skin and sand pebbles in our eyes each time a gust of December desert wind blew up through the sandstone windows. I bet the weather is nice there today, and I'd like to be there instead of here in this rainy atypical February weather. Ho hum...

Library

Here's a shot that's quite different from what I normally do. I was kickin' around downtown Salt Lake one night before Christmas and I wandered into Salt Lake City's beautiful new public library, found a book and cozied up among this row of chairs. I had my grandpa's wonderful Ansco Super Memar with me and snapped a few shots, but none I like as much as this.

Altered Landscapes

Mesa Arch, Island in the Sky, Canyonlands National Park

Isn't the desert Southwest just one of the most beautiful places in the world? Over New Year's, we road tripped down to southeastern Utah to see Arches and Canyonlands and over to Hovenweep National Monument in Colorado, and I was just star-struck, in awe, amazed, blown away and a hundred other words for being WOWED! If you haven't had a chance to visit that area, get movin'! What are you waiting for?

In other news, beginning this Friday, January 20, I've got six photographs in the "Altered Landscapes" exhibit at the Women's Art Center on Pierpont Ave. in Salt Lake City. The show runs through February 15. Check it out!

Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hanging out at the Albion Grill at Alta Ski Resort one Sunday to sell my wares. I had prints and oodles of note cards for sale and made a buck or two, but the best part was the snowy landscape behind me. The heavenly white stuff was was coming down heavily in Big Fluffy Flakes, the kind that get stuck to your eyelashes as you open your mouth skyward and stick out your tongue. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I made this shot with my Holga with two or three handheld shutter clicks off the deck of the Grill. Good times! Enjoy and Happy Winter!
